Having
progressed through the junior to the professional ranks, James
Hibbard has over 15 years of competitive cycling experience. He is a
former Collegiate All-American track cyclist, trained as a resident
athlete at the United States Olympic Training Center, earned
international medals as part of the U.S. National Team, and was a
member of the powerhouse Shaklee and HealthNet Professional road
cycling teams. He has earned 13 National Track Championship medals,
as well as numerous junior, U-23 and elite California State
championships on both the road and track. Since retiring from
full-time racing in 2005, James has focused on his development as a
coach.
Since he began coaching, James has worked with a wide variety of
road, track endurance and track sprint athletes, ranging from those
who are new to the sport, to those who hold professional
aspirations. He has a sense not only for the upper echelons of the
sport, but also of how to best develop athletes over the long term
in order to maximize their potential. Having himself competed
throughout college, he is also familiar with keeping the balance of
cycling goals and other commitments—from a demanding work schedule
to full time school.
James has worked with athletes to meet a broad range of goals; from
weight loss, to working to perfect a standing start, to becoming
nationally competitive. He believes in focusing on not only the
physiological components needed for cycling success, but also the
tactical and psychological aspects of the sport. Several athletes he
has worked with have seen large improvements – even at already high
fitness levels – after addressing or re-addressing fundamentals of
pacing, equipment, and technique.
Racing on the track is about attention to detail, and James is
committed to helping his clients to make small changes that
collectively yield large improvements in performance.

"Thanks for the intelligent and comprehensive
training program. Simply put, I'm a faster rider on the track. I
wanted to take it to the next level, and the coaching program didn't
disappoint." ~Larry
"Because of the changes James has made on my
bike, I no longer have knee pain. It was so bad before, I avoided
hills and was taking 6 Advil a ride. One doc said I should give up
riding to avoid knee surgery down the line. I went down to Paso
Robles over the weekend and climbed up out of Cambria on Santa Rosa
Rd. and had ZERO knee pain! I was extatic. ~ Donna

Services offered by James Hibbard at Hellyer Velodrome
Video Analysis of Track Technique and Posture
Improving
one’s standing start is one of the most effective ways to shave time
off one’s team sprint, 500 meter, kilometer, pursuit or team
pursuit. Over a two-hour period James will analyze, suggest
improvements to, and videotape your standing start, helping you to
refine both your form and technique. Because of the near instant
feedback afforded through video-taping, many athletes have seen
extensive improvement of their standing start technique after just a
single session. For sprint and omnium cyclists, there is also the
option to review one’s flying 200 meter line and timing. (Without
video analysis, allow for one hour.)
At-The-Event Guidance and Analysis
Being
properly prepared for a session of track racing is all about
routine; when to warm-up, and in what gear; when and what to eat and
when to change to one’s race wheels. James will help you to
establish personalized and event specific warm-up, racing, and
cool-down procedures that work to minimize race-day stress. James
will use his years of experience to walk you through all aspects of
your race day nutrition, equipment preparation, gear changes,
warm-up and even registration, so as to reduce stress as much as is
possible on the day of your target event. For applicable timed
events James will work with you ahead of time to develop a pacing
schedule and call splits to you during the event. For mass-start and
sprint events James will help you to establish a race strategy and
tactical approach. (The number of hours will be contingent upon the
duration of the event. After the event you will also be provided
with a schedule so that all aspects of your race day routine are
repeatable.)
In-Person Equipment Review and Analysis
From gear
ratio selection to handlebar and tire choice, track events are
equipment intensive. Over a one to two hour period James will record
the measurements of your track bicycle, discuss your equipment
choices and help you to select the optimum equipment on an
event-by-event basis. (Although the equipment review and analysis
does not include a full fitting, a fitting can be done in
conjunction with the equipment review. Including a full-fitting for
a single bicycle, the equipment review and analysis along with a
fitting takes three to four hours.)
Pursuit
Scheduling and Pacing
Pursuiting
is about precision. Establishing and more critically being able to
follow a pacing schedule can greatly improve one’s time with the
same level of fitness. If you are targeting the individual or team
pursuit at an American Velodrome Challenge, the District
Championships, or the National Championships James can help you to
establish, and help you to learn to maintain a lap schedule that
will allow for a peak performance when it counts most. (The number
of hours required will vary.)
