Melissa Sanborn comes to Wenzel Coaching with a lifetime of sports experience and nine years of national and international level road-racing experience. She has earned several National Calendar podium appearances, including winning the Tour of Somerville and winning the 2004 American Criterium Championship Series.

Melissa enjoys coaching cyclists of all levels and ability, including those that juggle work, family and training time. She draws from her own experience on and off the bike in setting and achieving goals and overcoming obstacles to help others who are also passionate about their sport.

Melissa has been guided in her development both as a coach and an athlete by Kendra Wenzel. She started out racing local Oregon races in 1999 and quickly worked up through larger Oregon events like the Tour of Willamette and the Cascade Cycling Classic. Her goals from day one were to race as a paid professional on a trade team and someday go to the Olympics. She continues to race in the USA Cycling National Calendar Race series with Vanderkitten, and hopes to race in Europe again. Her prior racing experience includes international races such as the Tour of Tuscany and the Holland Ladies Tour as well as World Cup races in Germany and Holland in 2004 and Montreal in 2005.

Melissa grew up competing in a variety of sports from soccer and tennis to gymnastics and back country skiing. She enjoys working with road, criterium and cyclocross racers who either compete full time or balance their training with a full time or part time job and family life.

"By the way, I don't always express it but I'm very pleased with my progress this year and want to thank you for your help. I set a PR on Larch last week and Mt. Ashland (at least the climb) today which leaves me excited and motivated going into the race on Saturday. Your help has been great!" ~Ray

"So, your name was mentioned at the Prairie City race yesterday. I was lined up, ready for the start.  The announcer said "Hyland Fisher is leading the men's expert class.  Hyland, are you here? Raise your hand."  He asked me what I attributed to my winning the series.  I though for a brief second and said "The coach I hired."  He asked who that was.  I said "Melissa Sanborn of Wenzel Coaching." Thought you might enjoy that. ~

"I won the Men's cat C this morning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From the gun I attacked. Put the guys on the rivet. I did 5 sustained attacks at a little over 90% of max and whittled the field down. I finished alone. Thanks for all your help. You are a huge part of this win with me today. ~ Mark R.

"I am really enjoying working with Melissa Sanborn, and I appreciate the thought that went into Wenzel pairing her with me. Melissa is very invested in understanding me as an athlete and as a person (how can you separate the two, right?). As an elite athlete herself, she picks up on the nuances of all aspects of a rider's physical and mental fitness. I feel I am in very capable hands." ~ Mark D.
