Steven Beardsley
brings to Wenzel Coaching the drive and determination of an elite
competitor coupled with the experience and know-how of a seasoned
rider. With numerous podium places at the US Elite Track
National Championships as well as commanding wins at many of the
premiere Northwest criteriums in the last several years, Steven has
demonstrated his physical and tactical prowess over the field.
Steven's success on
the elite level has come while still balancing a full time job with
training, and he can relate to those riders who have limited
training time as well as young riders with elite goals. Whether your
weakness is a physical one like race-specific intensity, or a
tactical one such as how to effectively corner at speed, Steven has
the practical insight and teaching ability to help you overcome your
obstacles. He will work with your schedule to maximize your fitness
potential, identifying and building up the weaknesses while
assessing and fine-tuning strengths.
Steven's approach
to coaching includes more than just on-the-bike training, as he
knows being an athlete is more than just training and competing. His
patience, understanding, and dedication to maximizing his clients'
successes are part of his holistic and multi-variable approach.
Steven
is familiar with many races and events in the Pacific Northwest and
West Coast, including many of the road races and criteriums on the
OBRA and WSBA calendars as well as major criteriums such as the
Manhattan Beach Grand Prix and Portland Twilight Criterium. His
experience encompasses the velodrome also, where he has earned a
handful of wins and numerous top-5 placings in several American
Velodrome Challenge (AVC) events and silver medals in the Kilo TT
and Team Sprint and a bronze in the Keirin at the US National Track
Championships. While not on the tarmac, Steven participates in the
Pro field in may of the Oregon Cross Country and Super-D mountain
bike races.
The real-world experience and knowledge it takes to be a top
national track rider and a continuous threat to the Northwest road
racing scene give Steven an unmatched insight and awareness for the
small details that make or break a successful training program.
When he is not killing it on the bike, Steven enjoys watching
college football, assessing Portland's culinary scene,
mountaineering, and spending time with his fiancée.

"I
have been working with Steven for nearly a year. The program I
follow is set up so that my system is challenged enough to stimulate
gains in fitness and overall strength, but it is done in a way that
is sustainable. I have had injury issues in the past, but since
starting with Steven and Wenzel Coaching, I am finally feeling
confident in my body again. I greatly appreciate how Steven
approaches coaching because there is never any added pressure,
anxiety, or negativity associated with our interactions. He helps
keep me positive and excited about racing, and is an invaluable
resource when it comes to race tactics. I am glad I made the
decision to work with Steven and Wenzel coaching. I feel strong on
the bike and I know my training will put me in a position to do well
in big races." ~ Emily C
"During
my first and second years of work with Steven, I saw great
improvements in my results, and I look forward where it will go this
season. Not only did Steven help improve my overall fitness and
speed, but his coaching of race tactics and bike handling have
allowed me to keep progressing. Plus, because of his easygoing
demeanor, Steven is a pleasure to work with." ~ J Nelson
"Steven has been a great coach. He's helped me
find and then correct my weaknesses, and worked with me to
understand that bike racing is not just physically demanding, but
requires an enormous amount of mental training. We've worked on
everything from racing tactics to mental preparation for racing and
training. And, throughout all of this, Steven has been really fun to
work with - as he not only makes me faster on the bike, but have a
better time doing it." ~ Dan M
