    Johnny Fernandez

    Coach / Moorestown, New Jersey

Coach Johnny Fernandez of Moorestown, New Jersey can help you enjoy cranking up your cycling skills. Whether you are new to bicycles, returning after some time off, or an experienced cyclist looking to take your riding to the next level, Johnny wants to help you experience the joy and pride of reaching your goals.

With his background in education and coaching, Johnny can help you meet any cycling challenge. Do you want to develop your bike handling skills, improve your fitness, or simply learn to ride for the first time? Have you always wanted to bike to work, play on your local trails or conquer the city streets? Maybe you are interested in riding with your kids, bicycle commuting, prepping for your first century, planning an epic bicycle tour or are even considering your first bike race! Coach Johnny loves a good challenge and he wants to help you conquer yours.

Johnny believes that we learn and perform best when we are well-prepared, motivated, and feeling positive. He has worked in education for over 25 years, helping elementary, middle school, high school, and even adult learners to develop their knowledge, skills, and confidence in multiple areas, including Spanish, theater, science, and math as well as cycling. Johnny is a hands-on teacher who enjoys the process of guiding people to identify the learning techniques that work best for them instead of relying on standard prescriptions that might not serve a particular individual.

Johnny developed and led a summer cycling camp for seven years, working with hundreds of kids, teens, and their parents to develop confidence and skills in road and mountain biking. He guided cycling day trips for students and adults looking to expand their comfort at distance riding. Off the bike, he co-led overnight and multi-day canoe trips on rivers in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Johnny also coached multiple sports at the scholastic level for 12 years, including track and field, basketball and baseball.

Johnny is a lifelong cyclist who loves few things more than pedaling around on two wheels. He has ridden untold miles in and around the greater Philadelphia area. He consistently commuted a 40-mile round trip to work for over 15 years and worked as a bike messenger for several years. Johnny has joined club rides in the suburbs and large group rides in the city, such as the “Five-Boro Bike Tour” in NYC. He has been fortunate to experience the joy of bike riding around the world, including solo touring in Cuba and spending over two months riding solo along the Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James) in Spain, through France, and England.

Johnny has dabbled in cycling competition over the years, participating in everything from sanctioned cyclocross races to midnight city time trials, though he says that nothing beats the pleasure of a long ride exploring roads and trails with no particular destination. In addition to riding bikes, Johnny fixes them, too, volunteering as a mechanic and salesperson at a not-for-profit bike shop in Trenton, New Jersey.

Though he admits to being a Philly boy at heart, Johnny has spent significant time with family and friends abroad in Spain and Cuba. In the rare moments when Johnny is not thinking about bicycles or travel, he is thinking about food. He also works as a personal chef and caterer specializing in Spanish and Cuban cuisines, much to the enjoyment of his wife and children. Don’t hesitate to ask Johnny for some recovery food recipes when you are out on your next ride with him.

"I cannot recommend John highly enough. He has an excellent rapport with young children/adults. Everything he does is upbeat and fun. He makes learning fun." ~K. Sirinek

"I got to watch John work in a variety of areas of school life. He often taught a weeklong summer class on biking for kids who were 10-12 years old. I was impressed by his ability to embed skill-development, safety, and care of equipment into a week of pure fun. By the end of the week, the most hesitant student was happily and confidently bouncing his bike up and down a short flight of stairs or fixing a flat." ~Nancy V.A.

"John is very highly qualified to assume coaching relationships with clients. He is very personable, patient, encouraging, passionate and articulate. His enthusiasm for what he teaches and coaches is infectious." ~John M.
