Coach / Mountain Lake, Minnesota
An experienced teacher with over 25 years of riding and racing experience
Coach Luke Winger’s 25 years of experience include national championship level racing in junior, U23, collegiate, elite, and masters competition on the road, track and cyclocross. This extensive racing experience is backed up by a degree in physical education. Luke has worked and raced through multiple phases of life, from carefree junior to busy adult with family and work roles. This has prepared him to understand the needs and constraints of all athletes, no matter their age or other challenges.
Luke has a passion for helping athletes set and reach goals within their constraints of time, health, and finances. Examples include athletes who have finished their first bike race or triathlon, returning to cycling after extensive time away, and even learning new cycling disciplines that lead to collegiate national victories. Having undergone two hip impingement and labral repair surgeries, Luke knows first-hand what it’s like to return from an injury that’s kept him off the bike. His personal experience and extensive study give Luke an understanding of bike fit as it relates to injury prevention and how overuse injuries affect training. He can guide riders at risk in avoiding injury, or rehabbing.
Luke is equipped to work with athletes doing a combination of events. Though his strongest areas include road cycling, track cycling and cyclocross, he is also informed and passionate about mountain biking, triathlon, and Nordic skiing. Experience as a high school Nordic ski coach helps him guide skiers in both training and technique. His race experience backs this up, with a top 20 finish Minnesota’s largest ski race, the Mora Vosaloppet Classic.
Luke’s understands the young rider’s passion for cycling. He himself began at 11 years old when he attended a group ride through his church that involved riding to and eating breakfast at a truck stop. Luke rode 35 miles on his dad’s mountain bike with his best friend. From then on, Luke was hooked, doing multiple touring events. On his 13th birthday, Luke did his first race as a licensed competitor.
Luke spent the following 15 years fully committed to the sport of cycling, winning multiple state championships and competing in 17 national championship events between road, track, and cyclocross. He reached category 1 on the road and track, earned an individual medal on the track, won the Minnesota track rider of the year, and won a stars stripes jersey as a member of a collegiate cyclocross team. Having raced with some of the top riders in the US in races like the Nature Valley Grand Prix, Tour of the Gila, Tour of Willamette, and the Elite Track Nationals,
Luke can help developing elite racers prepare for the big races and can share intimate knowledge of some of the most important American road courses.
After starting a family, Luke began coaching the Lees-McRae Collegiate Cycling Team, and between 2009 and 2012 led the team to a national title in cyclocross and seven podium finishes between road, track, mountain, and cyclocross. Luke then moved to China where he joined the Chinese XTJ team and started a middle school cycling program at the Beijing SMIC Private School.
In addition to coaching, Luke’s current focuses include riding fast on trails, gravel roads, and in group rides whenever possible. He is also a master juggler who uses his entertainment skills onstage to deliver motivational messages. Luke loves trips with his family, spending time with his wife and kids, and traveling internationally. He lives to talk about, think about, and do just about anything cycling and help people get better at whatever they do on bikes.

"Luke is the first coach to put me on a schedule. I used to just "ride really hard" every time I went out. He enlightened me about recovery days, intervals, openers, and building up base miles. He also taught me how to taper before a race. Tapering is my new favorite!" ~ J. Anderson
