Coach / Pleasanton, California
"Richard is an terrific listener and is extremely patient. Specifically, Richard has a unique gift to engage with those that show a tremendous amount of fear and create a sense of calm that no one else could achieve. Richard has enlightened so many in this sport with the gift of safe and knowledgeable cycling."
Coach Richard Asturias, D.C. of Pleasanton, California began cycling regularly while attending Chiropractic College. He graduated Valedictorian of his class in 1995 and now applies the same commitment to excellence in his chiropractic and coaching careers. He has been a masters road racer since 2005. His cycling achievements include personal victories, team victories, and a variety of goals accomplished by the racers and riders he coaches. Though Richard focuses now on cycling and particularly enjoys criteriums and fast finishes, his history also includes running and sprint distance triathlon. He is known as a “thinker” and enjoys helping his clients develop the many subtle skills and tactical nuances that a well rounded individual or team racer or recreational rider needs. He welcomes working with athletes who are new to criterium and road racing and team tactics, as well as race-seasoned individuals.
Richard has participated in many century rides and looks forward to helping more recreational riders reach their goals. He has taught cycling courses connected to local bike shops since 2009 and has also taught other coaches, presenting leadership courses for the Fremont Freewheelers Cinderella program instructors. Doc Rich is unique as a coach. While most coaches can claim to help athletes to maximize performance, Doc Rich can also help injured athletes to maximize effective healing and minimize healing time through chiropractic and myofascial therapies. His previous career as a machinist (Formula Ford and SW NASCAR) carries over naturally to the mechanical aspects of the bike. His combined mechanical and biomechanical knowledge base provides a unique perspective which may assist a racer/rider to optimize bike fit, comfort and power.
Richard communicates effectively with his audience whether working one-on-one or in a group format. He taught at Life Chiropractic College West for four years in three departments, delivered continuing education seminars for doctors of chiropractic, lectured on health and cycling related topics in varied settings, and has worked with individuals at many levels of health and cycling skill. Richard has trained as a cyclist while running a chiropractic office and raising a family. He enjoys helping busy athletes develop the skills and efficiency to train effectively while also attending to other responsibilities.
