    Sean Gardner

    Coach / Richmond, Virginia

Sean Gardner of Richmond, VA has spent over half of his life in the endurance sports scene. Starting as a cross-country runner and then discovering the bike, he rose to success as an All-American Triathlete and is now a professional road cyclist. In addition to his depth of experience competing at a high level, Sean is also a certified USAC Coach fluent in all types of training metrics including power and heart rate. He has personally climbed the ladder in skill level from beginner to expert on both the road and dirt, and he is able to break down those skills to their essential components to help clients of all levels perform their best. Sean has helped riders of various personalities and situations ranging from helping a racer go from Category 5 to Category 1, to improving a cyclist’s fitness from their first time on a bike to completing their first century.

Beginning his road career with the Virginia Tech collegiate team, Sean earned success with many podium spots, including at the Collegiate National Championships. Since then, he has competed in countless UCI races including Tour of the Gila, Redlands Classic and the USPro National Championships. He has raced internationally in both Europe and South America. While Sean now competes primarily on the road, he also has experience in gravel, cyclocross and mountain bike. If your goals include such dirt classics as Leadville or Dirty Kanza, Sean has been there and is ready to share the benefits of that experience.

The importance of work/training/life balance became very clear as he raced professionally while finishing up his BS in Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech. Sean helps his clients find that balance for themselves, aiding them to find the time they need for training, without giving up their other priorities. Whether it’s adjusting your plan to make use of a quick training session at lunch or finding time to ride while also spending time with family, Sean will help you achieve your athletic goals even if you are busy with your life and work. If you are a full-time athlete, Sean can create a program that balances appropriate cycling workouts with recovery and other training modalities for improved performance.

Sean can also help with setbacks and support you as you work around unforeseen life events. When a broken hip challenged his rise as an elite cyclist, he persevered through the healing, delayed training, and loss of fitness to complete a return to successful professional racing. His awareness of the emotional and physical impacts of injuries and other setbacks allows him to create plans to help individuals through similar situations. Whether you have a nagging injury or simple aches and pains that keep you from enjoying a work out, Sean will analyze your specific needs and create a plan that works.

Sean is based out of Virginia, but has experience riding on the terrain and climate of almost every state in the US. When not coaching or racing, Sean enjoys hiking and camping and being in the great outdoors. To relax, he enjoys cooking, experimenting with new recipes. His dog, Lucy, is his official taster.

"Sean has really helped me enjoy the sport of cycling. He has coached me through my introduction to the sport and has helped me improve to being proficient at riding my first century! He has made me feel welcome and is very inviting in sharing any bit of advice that he thinks would help me improve. I have high praise for him as both a friend and a kind human being."
    ~Paul Herring

"Sean was able to provide his services to help me reach a new level in competitive road cycling. Before working with Sean, I was an average CAT 5 racer. Immediately once I started working with him I saw improvements. I was able to work my way up to a CAT 3 racer in just one year! He has taught me valuable skills on the bike and off. He has given valuable knowledge about tactics, nutrition and recovery. I would recommend Sean for any athlete looking to improve in a non-intimidating environment." ~Scott Gander
